Help:Add Images

From Wikia Help

This is a new feature on Wikia!

Contents

The Add Images extension is a new feature that allows you to add images directly from the edit page to articles from three sources:

  • Images already uploaded to the wiki.
  • Free images on Flickr.
  • Images sitting on your PC.

Before you begin...

Please visit our online demos page for a video demonstrating how to upload an image to your wiki and a lot more - Help:Video demos!

Benefits

  • You can easily add an image from "anywhere" when editing an article, without having to navigate away from the page.
  • Previews of image thumbnails, sizing, layout, and captions improve the ease of choosing the right image and layout.
  • You can search wiki images by keywords, making it easier to discover images you can use/re-use as needed.
  • Images are inserted using the familiar formatting (thumbnail, alignment, pixel widths, etc.).

We hope that this will increase the number of articles with images, making for a more interesting wiki experience.

How to use Add Images

  1. Go to the page you wish to add an image to.
  2. Click edit, and place the edit cursor at the point in the article you wish to add an image.
  3. Click the Add Image icon on the editing toolbar - this brings up the Add Image screen as shown on the right.
  4. Choose the source, sizing, and placement within the article for your image. Make sure to click "Insert File" at the end.

Image location options

As the illustrations show below, once you choose the source of your image, you will be prompted to specific the sizing, placement, and caption for the image. These will vary slightly depending on the source for the image.

Completing the wizard

The following shows when you have successfully selected/uploaded the image and chosen all the required options. The code shown is exactly what will be placed in the article.

The above code then gets placed in the edit screen at your originally selected location, and you can save the page as normal. You should produce something like this, depending on the options you chose earlier:

The finished product

Note you can change the image code as normal before saving the article.

What if I try to use a filename already in use?

We've thought of that! If you try it, you will get this screen:

Image overload!

You can choose to:

  1. Rename your image (the most likely choice)
  2. Choose the existing image (e.g. if the existing image is a better choice)
  3. Overwrite the existing image (as this is unlikely, this option is de-emphasized)
