Kaltura's MediaWiki extension allows you to collaboratively create and edit videos, music, images, and animations directly on the wiki.
What is a Collaborative Video?
A collaborative video is a video started by you or someone else. Anyone with editing permissions can add images, videos and sounds to the collaborative video, or edit it using the full-featured online video editor.
Creating Collaborative Videos
In order to start a collaborative video on any wiki page, simply click on the "Collaborative Video" link in the toolbox. Alternatively, you can click on the Collaborative Video button on the editing toolbar within any wiki page. Next, you will fill out a short form about the video, select the size and placement of the widget, and at the bottom of the form you will get a 'widget code' (this is the code for the video player that you can add to any wiki page). Paste the code in the page where you want to add the collaborative video. Now, anyone with editing permission can add images, videos and sounds to this video and edit it directly from the player that was created. To get the collaborative video started, you are encouraged to add videos, images or sounds to it.
All further contributions and edits to the collaborative video are done directly from the video player itself on the wiki page.
This is the form to create a new collaborative video:
Contributing to Collaborative Videos
In order to contribute to a collaborative video, click the "Add to this Video" button below the player screen on the collaborative video widget. You will then be guided through a simple flow of either uploading your own material or browsing through and importing material from relevant Creative Commons sources, such as the WikiCommons and New York Public Library database. You can either add one file to the video, or select multiple files to add simultaneously. Each new clip will be added automatically at the end of the video, which users can then edit and remix using the online editor.
Editing Collaborative Videos
Any user with editing permission can easily edit a collaborative video by clicking on the "Edit this Video" button located right below the player screen on the collaborative video widget. When clicking on the edit button, users are redirected to Kaltura's online editor where they can edit and remix the various clips that have been uploaded to that specific video. The editor also includes a range of special effects, transitions and features. To save a new version of the video, click the "Publish" button within the editor and the video will be saved. You can then choose whether to continue editing or to return to the wiki article.
Collaborative Video Details and History
On every collaborative video widget there is a "details" icon, similar to the "image enlarge" icon on wiki images, located at the bottom right of the widget. The details icon links to a page that includes: video info and summary, last revision date, the code that displays the widget (which you can copy and paste on any article) and a search for pages that link to the widget.
Similar to image pages, this page also includes a History list detailing all the revisions made and the option to compare two versions. Comparing two versions will display two widgets side by side on the page.
As with any wiki item, users can revert to a previous version of the collaborative video. As always, this step should be done with care.
